How should you wait when a new dog hides at home?
A new dog that hides or keeps distance may need room to retreat. Instead of taking the dog out or holding it, provide a quiet resting place and a clear way to move away, then let the dog choose when to come closer.

Do not treat hiding as a cue to make friends immediately
Hiding or keeping distance can mean that a dog needs space to step back in an unfamiliar setting. Do not pull the dog out, hold it or insist on petting. Provide a comfortable place and an open route away.
Let every family member follow the same rest-space rule
It is hard for a dog to rest if one person waits while another brings it out. Agree not to disturb the resting place and keep the food, water and bed area quiet. Ask a vet about worrying changes such as not eating, repeated vomiting or diarrhoea instead of assuming they are only adjustment.
